Our Goats

This is Star. She was bottle fed - that's her mom in the background. She is 3 years old. She is a pygmy/boer/nubian mix.

This is Lightening. We rescued her, the only surviving kid from our herd 2 years ago - the Billy (who was shortly afterwards put in a freezer) managed to kill all of them as they were born - except this one - it was the coldest birthing season we ever had, and one of the earliest and we had not separated the Billy out. We brought Lightening inside and bottle fed her partly formula and partly from her mom. She went everywhere with us for several weeks - even to church! Same parents as Star.

This is our old matron - Jewel. Ruth bought her something like 14 years ago as a baby. She's mostly given us twins, with at least 2 sets of triplets (Lightening was one of triplets). She had one bad udder though and didn't take to nursing triplets at all. She's full Nubian - and if you can get her to stand still, gives a LOT of milk. ... or did. She is dry now.

We've been chaining them in the weedy front yard every day. In the foreground, you can see the stalks with no leaves. Goats are really picky eaters if they are well fed. They really like poison ivy! Good thing, we have plenty.
