We used Quilter Needles, which worked great for these little hands.
But the only material my mom could find was facing - I don't recommend a repeat of that! The facing tore many times, in spite of the fact that we carefully punched little holes for them to use.
Shianne was a natural. I only had to untangle her twice.

Joel stayed tangled and didn't do much - but yesterday he picked it back up, listened to the instructions, and did very well.
Bethie wasn't quite sure what to do. She'll need a lot more practice.
Matthew had a few bad starts, but quickly figured it out. His biggest problem was pulling the whole string through the hole, which left the tail behind, then he would pull hard after 3 or 4 holes and it would tare.
Alex concentrated very hard on his. The tearing upset him.
I was very pleased with their efforts. It was different.
I'm thinking about getting a couple of yards of loose weave cloth and letting Joel make up a bunch of these for Christmas next year.
Great for fine motor skills and hand eye coordination!
